Problem statement

The advancement of science and technology is a major feature of the 21st century. Sustainability and industrialization strive in an economy where the practice of science and technology is ingrained in the everyday life of people (Saka and Onanuga, 2019). The development of science and technology in a nation is deep-rooted in the teaching and learning of sciences in senior secondary school education (Omorogbe, and Ewansiha 2013). Therefore, effective science teaching and learning creates an environment for efficient practice of science and technology which helps to transcend a nation into solid global development.

Project Overview: Promoting Scientific Literacy in Nigerian Schools

The goal of this project is to enhance scientific literacy among students aged 14 to 16 in 51 schools located in Enugu and Abuja, Nigeria. By improving their understanding of scientific concepts and their applications, students will be better equipped to explore opportunities within their environment, predict outcomes, interpret results, and contribute to technological development. Targeting senior secondary schools, both private and public, across Nigeria, the project comprises two main activities: Science Teacher Training and a Science Competition, all aimed at promoting scientific literacy.

Science Competitions

The science competitions serve as a platform for students to engage with pressing issues affecting Nigeria, including pollution, sustainable energy, sustainable farming, climate change, cyber security, and sexually transmitted diseases. Students are tasked with applying their knowledge of scientific methodologies to identify practical solutions to these challenges within their immediate society. By addressing real-world problems, students not only deepen their understanding of scientific concepts but also develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for their future roles as contributors to societal progress.

Science Teacher Training

The science teacher training component is designed to equip educators with the pedagogical tools and strategies necessary to effectively teach science subjects. Through interactive sessions, teachers gain insights into connecting scientific concepts with the Nigerian environment, making learning more relevant and engaging for students. By providing examples and case studies tailored to local contexts, the training empowers teachers to deliver impactful science education that resonates with their students.

Pilot Phases

The project underwent pilot phases in both Enugu state and Abuja, Nigeria, allowing for iterative improvements based on feedback and lessons learned. These pilot phases provided valuable insights into the implementation process and highlighted the need for tailored approaches to address the unique challenges and opportunities present in each location.

In summary, this project represents a concerted effort to promote scientific literacy and inspire a new generation of thinkers and problem-solvers in Nigeria. Through collaborative partnerships and targeted interventions, it strives to create lasting impacts that transcend the boundaries of the classroom and pave the way for a brighter future.
